Social Impact |
Social Impact & Special Achievements | The main target groups for Fair Trade within their organization are the same groups they target for employment. The Fulani ethnic group is generally underrepresented in all formal sectors – employment, education, government spending, non-government aid. Therefore, Fulani villages are targeted to receive community projects. However, they do not limit their projects to the Fulani ethnic group. In fact, they make a concerted effort to include as many ethnic groups as possible in their various community projects. In addition, they target women, as they are underrepresented in much the same way in that they are also excluded from the various formal sectors, especially if they are illiterate. Poverty and illiteracy are two major factors for the high maternal death rate in their community, for example. Their other major target group is students. In rural Togo, the dropout rate is incredibly high. Children face many obstacles in obtaining an education, but many of these can be overcome relatively simply. They have several projects aimed at encouraging and aiding students to stay in school. See their Social and Fair Trade History document and Social and Fair Trade Policy for further information on their target organizations and how they distribute their „premium“ to their communities.
Use of Fair Trade Premium | The organization was set up to empower women and combat poverty. Expenditures far exceed fair trade premium standards. The collection and shipping of used bicycles from the US and their distribution to communities beyond those that participate in the cooperative and shea nut collection shows a significant impact on drop out rates. Furthermore, projects to foster maternal health, provide school materials and help with reforestation are financed with premium money.
